What is TRE?
TRE™ (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises)
TRE™ is a body‑based method designed to help people naturally release deep muscular tension, stress, and trauma. It was developed by Dr. David Berceli, who worked in war zones and disaster areas and noticed that people across cultures share a natural shaking or trembling response after extreme stress.
TRE™ uses a series of simple physical movements to activate this built‑in reflex in a safe, controlled way.
How TRE™ works
The method is based on the idea that the body stores stress in the muscles—especially the psoas, a deep core muscle involved in the fight‑or‑flight response.
TRE™ aims to:
- Gently fatigue certain muscle groups
- Trigger a natural neurogenic tremor (a shaking response)
- Allow the nervous system to discharge tension
- Restore a sense of calm and balance
These tremors are not forced; they arise spontaneously once the exercises activate the reflex.
What a TRE™ session looks like
A typical session involves:
- A short warm‑up with simple stretches or holds
- Lying on the floor in a relaxed position
- Allowing tremors to begin and move through the body
- Letting the process continue for several minutes
- Ending with grounding and rest
Sessions can be done with a certified TRE provider or practised alone once learned.
Why people use TRE™
People often turn to TRE™ for:
- Stress reduction
- Recovery from chronic tension
- Support after trauma
- Better sleep
- Emotional regulation
- Increased body awareness
- Support better recovery after a physical exercise
⚠️ A gentle reminder
TRE™ is generally considered safe for many people, but it’s not a substitute for professional mental‑health or medical care. If someone has a history of trauma, dissociation, or medical conditions, working with a trained provider is recommended.
